God of War wasn't just my favorite game that I played in all of 2018, it's now easily my favorite game of this console generation. While 2019 is looking great on paper, it's going to take a whole lot to unseat Kratos from this throne.
Easily the most slept-on game of 2018 , Sabotage Studios' The Messenger won me over after the first five minutes that I saw it back at PAX East. Not only does it have some of the tightest controls and gameplay mechanics out of anything I've played this year, but the twists and turns that this game takes are also something you'd never expect upon first glance. The Messenger isn't just an homage to the sidescrolling games of yesteryear, it also trailblazes a new path for the genre as a whole moving forward.
Patch 14.2 is quite a big one, as it includes two brand new weapons, plenty of changes, and even chickens! Full details can be found in the patch notes below, but here's quick overview of the most important b
You can leave a Ranked Match up to 5 minutes after (but not before) the plane has taken off without losing reputation, in situations where matchmaking has provided you with a random teammate who has then exited the ma
Minecraft seemingly took no time at all to establish itself as something special. The mechanics were accessible and nuanced, its simplistic art design quickly became iconic, and Minecraft's truly open world let players both escape from the real world and create their own. It was a game that became attractive to all ages, especially to those who grew up with LEGO and had a fascination with build
This year saw the release of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which played a huge role in revitalizing the horror genre as well as raising multiple Let's Play YouTubers to stardom, such as Felix Kjellberg, better known as PewDiePie. However, the brutally hard platformer Super Meat Boy not only revitalized its genre and gained some mainstream recognition through YouTube channels like KidsReact, but it also started to bring more mainstream attention to the speedrunning community and established extreme momentum and precision as staple mechanics which can still be seen in contemporary platformers like Celeste and Ghost Runn
**A brand new PUBG update arrived earlier today (November 2nd or 3rd depending on where you're based), having previously been released exclusively for the PC Test Servers. It brings the game to version 14.2 with plenty of new features and changes
Like 2010, this year saw significant releases such as Celeste , which balanced ultra-difficult platforming with difficulty adjustment options and showed that platformers have the ability to tell a beautiful story about identity and mental health with nuance and respect. Frostpunk , however, released without as much attention even though it elevated the city-building genre to new and more complex heights. Frostpunk takes the experience of the totalitarian border inspector simulator Papers, Please and applies it to running an entire city in which the survival of hundreds is on the line and the biggest hurdle to success is the player's morality and the sacrifices they are (and aren't) willing to make. Both of these releases act as reminders that video games are fully capable of being art that tackle difficult subjects and do so with c
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is still going strong after its 4-year anniversary, and although the Battle Royale market has been flooded with games ever since its release, there are still plenty of reasons to check out PUBG in 2021. Even if it's to prepare for the release of PUBG 2, which is in development, by the w
Choosing the most important indie game of each year since 2008 is not purely about popularity - though there is some intersection - and there are cases when multiple influential titles were released in the same year. 2016, for instance, saw the release of No Man’s Sky , The Witness , and Inside - all significant indie games that pushed the boundaries of their genres. But certain indie titles did more for the industry as a whole, at times even popularizing or establishing new genres of their
We are proud to introduce the Chicken, a new creature that will hopefully amuse many players during fierce combats in Taego! “Chicken? Why the heck?†you might wonder. The answer to this question is left to your imaginati
Obviously, PUBG: Battlegrounds will be accessible to every Xbox owner for free two days after its removal from Game Pass, so there’s less pressure for subscribers to beat that clock. Due to the battle royale nature of the title, the amount of time it would take to beat PUBG is a far more nebulous topic than some of the other considerable time sinks leaving the service in January. Getting a win on Game Pass is likely the barometer that many will subscribe to, and is a feat that’s highly dependent on skill and luck. For the completionists looking for a challenge, it’s worth keeping in mind, however, that getting all of the achievements in PUBG Story Guide can take well over 200 ho
