The flush valve tells a different story. If water is draining slowly from the cistern into the pan even when nobody has touched the button or handle, the flush valve seal or siphon washer has likely perished and is no longer sealing the outlet at the base of the tank. This shows up as a cistern that refills every few minutes with no obvious trigger, sometimes described by customers as topping itself up rather than running continuously. On older gravity-fed systems built around a siphon rather than a valve, a split diaphragm inside the siphon body produces the same symptom.

A side-entry fill valve takes its supply through the side wall of the cistern, typically a few centimetres up from the base, with the water pipe running horizontally into the tank. This is the older and still very common arrangement in UK homes, particularly where the supply pipe rises through a wall cavity or runs along a skirting board before turning up into the cistern. Side-entry valves are usually the easier option where floor space beneath the cistern is tight, since there is no need for the pipe to come straight up from below.

Where brand-specific parts genuinely earn their keep is on cisterns built to a proprietary design that a universal part simply cannot replicate. Concealed cistern frames are the clearest example, since the tank dimensions, fill valve fitting and flush plate connection are often specified by the frame manufacturer and will not accept a generic part regardless of how adjustable it claims to be. Some premium close-coupled suites also use proprietary flush valve shapes or seal profiles that a standard universal valve will not seat against correctly, leading to a slow leak that only appears once the cistern is refilled and left running for a while.

Available space inside and around the cistern also narrows the choice. A shallow cistern with limited depth may not give a bottom-entry valve enough room to seat correctly, while a side-entry valve needs clear wall space at the right height with no other fittings in the way.

Specifying a fill valve replacement sounds like a simple job until the plumber gets to site and finds the water supply enters the cistern from an unexpected direction. Fill valves are built around one of two entry positions, side-entry or bottom-entry, and the wrong choice means either a valve that will not connect to the existing pipework or one that fouls the cistern wall on the way in.

Fixing centres, meaning the distance between the two mounting holes in the pan, is the measurement that actually determines whether a seat will fit at all, and it varies enough between manufacturers that assuming a standard spacing is a common source of returned parts. The two most frequently seen spacings in the UK are around 140mm to 145mm and 160mm to 165mm centre to centre, Plumb2U and a seat bought for the wrong spacing simply will not sit over both holes.
