Exercising After Cosmetic Surgery

Resuming Exercise After Undergoing Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery procedures are often performed to enhance an individual’s appearance and aesthetics. Regardless of your reasons for opting for cosmetic surgery, the long-term success of these procedures largely depends on your commitment to an effective recovery process, adherence to a healthy diet, embracing a balanced lifestyle, and incorporating regular exercise post-surgery.

It is not uncommon for patients to feel better and eager to return to their regular exercise routines shortly after being discharged from our Baker Street clinic. However, in most instances, it is inadvisable to resume physical activity too soon after surgery. It is crucial to resume exercise gradually and only after seeking guidance from our experienced medical team at Centre for Surgery.

Please bear in mind that exercising prematurely during the recovery period can delay your healing. It is of utmost importance to allow your body ample time to heal and recover before returning to your regular exercise regimen. This ensures you can enjoy the full benefits of the cosmetic surgery procedure without compromising your health or the results.

Recovery and exercise after plastic surgery are highly individualised processes, with no universal approach suitable for everyone. Each patient’s healing and recovery rates can vary significantly. Some individuals may be able to engage in light activities on the same day they undergo a minor procedure, such as an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, while others may take several days to regain a sense of normalcy after the same surgical intervention.

General Exercise Timeline After Cosmetic Surgery

While every procedure and every patient is different, the following general timeline gives a reliable framework for most cosmetic surgery procedures. Always defer to your own surgeon’s specific guidance above these general guidelines.

Complete rest is essential during the first week. You should not attempt any formal exercise. However, getting up and walking short distances around the home from day two onwards is actively encouraged — not for fitness, but for circulation. Gentle movement every hour or so during the day helps prevent blood clots (deep vein thrombosis), which are a recognised risk in the early postoperative period. Keep walks short — just a few minutes at a time is sufficient.

For most procedures, gentle walking outdoors can be introduced during this phase, building gradually from five to ten minutes to around twenty minutes per day by the end of week four. This is still not exercise in the traditional sense — it should feel easy and should not cause increased swelling, pain, or breathlessness. Avoid anything that raises your heart rate significantly or places strain on the surgical site. No gym, cycling, swimming, yoga, or stretching sessions during this phase.

For lower-impact procedures such as eyelid surgery or minor facial procedures, a return to light lower-body exercise such as gentle walking or stationary cycling may be appropriate by week four to six, subject to surgeon approval. For breast and body procedures, this phase still requires caution — avoid exercises involving the upper body, core engagement, or anything that stretches or stresses the incision sites.

Most patients are cleared for a graduated return to structured exercise between six and twelve weeks post-surgery, depending on the procedure. This means reintroducing resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, and gym sessions carefully, starting at lower intensity and building progressively. Your surgeon will advise at your six-week follow-up appointment what is appropriate for your specific recovery.

For the majority of procedures, full exercise capacity is restored by three months. For more extensive surgeries — such as tummy tuck, body lift, or combined procedures — it may take closer to four to six months before you can train at full intensity without restriction.

Importance of Gradual Movement and Exercise After Surgery

During your consultation at our Baker Street clinic, your surgeon will discuss the key aspects of your recovery and the precautions needed to ensure a successful surgical outcome. Adhering to these postoperative care recommendations is vital to avoid unsatisfactory results after your procedure.

One of the key recommendations provided by our surgeons is the need for gentle movement as soon as possible following cosmetic procedures such as breast surgery, liposuction, tummy tuck, and others. Engaging in gentle movement is essential for your overall well-being, as it can accelerate your recovery and help prevent complications such as blood clotting.

While taking short walks around the room or your home is encouraged from day one, it may take some time before you can fully return to your regular exercise routine.

For most upper body procedures, there is a strict "no lifting" rule in place. This includes surgeries such as breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction. Patients are advised not only to avoid lifting weights or heavy objects but also to avoid overstretching their arms, to avoid placing excessive pressure on the incisions. Consequently, even light stretching or yoga is not recommended during the initial weeks after the procedure.

Body contouring procedures, such as tummy tuck and mummy makeover surgery, also include recommendations to reintroduce exercise into your routine gradually. This should only be done after at least four to six weeks post-op or once the incisions have fully healed. By following these guidelines and resuming exercise gradually and under supervision, you can ensure a smooth recovery and enjoy the lasting benefits of your chosen cosmetic surgery procedure.

Prioritise Healing and Recovery After Plastic Surgery

Undergoing cosmetic plastic surgery can often lead to a renewed appreciation for taking good care of your body. It is essential to remember that your body requires adequate time to heal and recuperate after undergoing such procedures. Pushing yourself too hard or resuming your regular activities too soon can delay recovery and even lead to complications.

By allowing your body the time it needs to heal, you are giving yourself the best chance for a successful recovery and long-lasting, satisfactory results from your plastic surgery procedure. It is crucial to pay close attention to your medical team’s guidance and follow their recommendations for postoperative care.
