On button-actuated cisterns with a rigid spindle, the button sits directly above a plastic or metal rod that passes through the cistern lid and connects to a lever arm on the flush valve below. Pressing the small button rotates or depresses the spindle partially, lifting the flush valve seal just enough for a short flush.
